The inspiration for this week is my own little family! I need to get new portraits done with my 3 kiddos, and I have been back and forth on whether I want gray and yellow, totally bright and colorful, or a soft monochromatic look in whites, creams, light gray, light beige, blush pink... can't decide. So I did gray and yellow this week to see what kinda cuteness was out there... and there's actually a fair amount!

My absolute favorite season is fall... always has been. I love the cooler temps, crisp air (bye, humidity, miss you, NOT) and the fall colors. So when I decided to do a fashion/what to wear feature, I got very excited to realize that it was already time to start planning for FALL photos!

I've always loved bright, bold colors... but I've been itching to do a more monochromatic type layout lately. This denim and gray scheme would look so subtle, soft and timeless against the backdrop of fall leaves.

I feel the need to reiterate how much I LOVE repeat clients. So much. They make me smile.

I did family portraits for these gorgeous folks last year, and when Jessica contacted me for updated pics... and told me she is expecting... I was suuuper excited. First of all, they are fun and awesome. Second, baby bellies make me giddy.

Pregnant ladies glow, dude. They look beautiful in every pose.

I cannot WAIT to meet the new baby girl... if she's as cute as the other 2 my head might explode.

We hit up the Old Mill for this shoot. Any 9 months pregnant lady who is game to wade knee-deep into the creek is ok in my book.

Time sure does fly. It's hard to believe that I first photographed this sweet girl in August 2010 at her newborn session. Her baby plan days are almost done.. just the one year session remains. I will never forget the looks on the faces of baby J's parents when I walked out with him after our session.

*shock, awe, jubilation*

"YOU GOT HIM TO TAKE A PACI? HOW DID YOU DOOOO THAT?"

Patience, my dears. I showed them my little trick, and J has been happily sucking away at his paci ever since. I think I may have earned an honorary auntie title for it, no joke.

I love my job. As a mom of 3, I love meeting first-time parents. The comment I get the most, hands-down is...

"What is your secret?! We heard the baby start to cry a few times and within 2 seconds he/she stopped!!!"

I can usually see the whites of their eyes a bit at this point.

Want to know the secret?

RELAX.

Babies know when you're upset, frustrated, anxious. After 3 of my own and countless in front of my camera, a little crying does not scare me. 80% of the time I don't even pick the baby up. I cover him or her with a blanket, put my hand on the top of their head and my other hand on their baby bum, making a SHHHHH sound, and gently rock them, juuuuuust a little. And most of the time within 2 seconds the baby is calm.

We dressed her in about 56 different outfits, and she hung in there like a trooper. It took a little work to get laughs and smiles, but we stuck with it and ended up with some major cuteness.

It is always fun to have baby planners that are on a really close schedule. It means that every 3 months-ish I know I'm going to have multiple adorable babies to play with.

Gabby is such a tiny sweetheart... she had lots of giggles -- at my face, not so much at my camera -- but we persevered! 3 month shoots are a challenge but they are so dang cute at this age that it really doesn't matter. I think I spent equal time shooting and snuggling at this one.

¦Giving Back¦ Crisis Pregnancy Center Image Ministry -- Germany

I have the great privilege of knowing a wonderful lady named Rosie. She is a fellow photographer, and is one of the best people I've EVER known.

Rosie got involved with a project for a Crisis Pregnancy Center in Germany. The Center's purpose is to educate and help expectant women who find themselves with nowhere else to turn, to avoid these women getting back-alley abortions... to allow lives to be saved and to spread the word about God's grace.

Our part in this as photographers is as an image ministry. Several photographers from all over the country came together to donate images and time to put together beautiful displays for the Center that celebrate pregnancy, life, newborns, babies, children and families.

Rosie has poured hours of time and her whole heart into designing the perfect collections for the various walls and rooms, and images are in process... some in the lab, some crossing the pond, but all under way. We are all on pics and needles waiting to see photos of the finished project.

For my part, I donated images as well as some word art for counseling rooms and a coffee table album for the lobby area. Here are some pics of the album.

God willing, the images, time and prayer that have been poured into the project will speak to women and really make a huge difference!

¦Personal Stuff¦ Teacher Appreciation

The end of the school year is fast approaching. It's been a whirlwind of a year for my little family.

My girl Sophie is finishing up kindergarten... she started out not even saying the alphabet in order (though I tried!) and now she can read (and loves to), write and spell on a 2nd grade level. Her teachers have been AMAZING, so smart, so sweet, and such a blessing. It's been a joy to watch my girl grow, learn, and begin to come into her own. She's grown so much physically and in maturity in just a few months.

My boy Ian is rounding out his 4th grade year. It's starting to hit me that next year will be his last as an elementary schooler. He's 10, and has become incredibly more mature and grown up this last year, becoming the man of the house and taking care of me and his little sisters. Of course, in most ways he's still a little boy, as evidenced by his comment just this morning... we got in the car to head to school, and he exclaimed "Mom! Those birds up in the tree are mating! I can tell because their beaks are touching!"

Ah, the innocence of youth. I hope he retains that for a while longer.

My kiddos on their first day of kindergarten/4th grade:

Both kids have had incredible teachers this year. Ian went from a trouble-maker, excellent grades but constantly in trouble, to having a teacher who understands that all kids have unique personalities and that Ian's happens to include that he likes to talk. Constantly. And always has. Once he started talking, he never stopped... and she says "Well, that's just Ian. We work around it and usually what he has to say is very interesting!"

Wow... now that is a new experience. He is embraced for his personality instead of punished for it.

The principal is also the #1 best principal anywhere ever, take my word for it. This year was a new school for Ian and of course it was Sophie's first year... the 3rd day of school I walked in with them and the principal grinned, hugged, and called my kids by name. It blew my mind... she is amazing, and she's also leaving this year to become a professor. I'm so happy for her, but also so sad she won't be there next year.

This has become a super long post, but the point of it is, I knew I needed to get some really great gifts for the teachers and principal this year. I want them to know just how much they have blessed my kids with their patience, attention, understanding and cheer.

Prep work begins for presents...

I found the aluminum thermoses at Starbucks on clearance for $4.99 (regularly $20!). I got 2 packs of erasers ($1 each at Target), 4 packs of pencils ($1 each at Target), a pack of "Thanks a Latte" thank you cards ($3 at WalMart), 4 mini bags of Millstone coffee ($1.29 each at WalMart), 3 photo-holding pencil boxes ($1 each at Target), and a bag of Lindor assorted truffles (20, on clearance for $4.48 at Target).

I did pencil boxes for Sophie's 2 teachers and Ian's teacher and added their pictures. I already had some yellow tulle, colorful mini paper bags (from Target, I think like $3 for a pack of 12), the colorful raffia ($1 per pack at Target), and the cardboard/metal gift tags (also from Target, don't remember how much, but cheap lol).

I had the kids write their own thank you card messages, and sealed the envelopes with dimensional butterfly stickers I already had (got at Michael's, $1 for 6). Then I wrote my own cards to the teachers and principal as well.

I put the erasers and pencils (sharpened and ready for next year!) inside the thermoses. The coffee and truffles went inside the paper bags, which I stamped with a little stamp I already had. I punched holes in the bags and in the corner of the card envelope (not through the cards themselves) and tied those on with the raffia. I stuck the thermoses into the pencil boxes and put the yellow tulle around the edges. The cardboard tags worked perfectly on the thermos lids and let them know there are more goodies inside!

Altogether, the 4 gifts ended up costing about $11-12 each, and they are full of coffee, chocolate, supplies, and sweet sentiment... and of course, photos for remembering the cutest kids ever.

¦North Carolina Photographer¦ Behind the Scenes

Every time I finish up a session, I let the parents know that it will take around 2 weeks for me to edit their images and post their online gallery. They always nod and say "ok", but I can see the excitement in their eyes, their impatience to view the beautiful new portraits of their baby, children, selves, family, etc.

Why the wait? Commercial portrait studios can take your photos, show them to you, and hand the chosen prints over, all within about an hour. There's a huge difference in the level of service and expertise that needs to be taken into consideration.

Professional portrait photographers are artists. When I shoot a newborn session, for instance, I spend an average of 2-3 hours shooting. I take all the time that's needed to soothe, feed, change and pose the baby. Once I get to the computer, I spend from 5-7 hours choosing the best photos, and editing each individual image by hand. Then there is the process of optimizing the portraits for best web viewing, uploading them, and creating a personal, password-protected gallery.

Add to that the initial emails and consultations, ongoing emails and phone calls leading up to the session, and answering questions about my services and helping with ordering, and you end up with an average of 10-15 hours of labor going into the session. Besides the time and labor involvement, there is also time spent on marketing my business, updating my website and portfolio, blogging sessions, answering emails from prospective clients, driving to and from sessions, packing and unpacking for each session, updating my Facebook page, consulting with clients on wardrobe and wall display ideas, creating cards and storyboards, placing print orders, and much more.

This gives a basic idea of what goes into running a photography business. It's a labor of love, and one that I put 150% into. I want the experience to be fun, relaxing, and rewarding for every client; I want them to come back to me again and again through the years to document their changing and growing families. I want them to feel special, important, and like they are a priority -- because they are!

One of my favorite families took advantage of my spring mini-session special recently, and I thought it was very cool that we were able to time it when Matt was in town. As a blended family, this one seriously WORKS... it gives me real hope for my kids, seeing these 3 interact with each other and their mom/dad/stepmom/stepdad... they all just seem like one big happy family... which of course they are! Just goes to show there is no one perfect type of family... it's up to us to make our family happy.

I've been best friends with Carrie for oh, 16 years now... we met as sophomores in high school... oddly enough, in the same biology class we had with the wonderful guy who is now my boyfriend! A fateful class indeed.

As best friends tend to do, we planned to "one day" with "one of our kids" to get pregnant at the same time. That just doesn't work out very often though as lives go on and take individual courses.

God knows things we don't know though, because through a very, VERY odd twist of fate, Carrie and I ended up pregnant within a month of each other. Hers was planned and hard-won; mine was a complete shock and not at all good timing... but that's a story for another day. We both ended up blessed with healthy pregnancies, and healthy baby girls.

Carrie's Elena Avahlea was born premature at a tiny 2 pounds... 10 days later Emalie Annalise arrived weighing 7lb 11oz... my smallest baby by far (the other two both weighed 9 pounds)! Check them out in the pics... you'd never know that Lanie was such a tiny smidgen when she was born!

Before you ask, we chose the names separately and didn't reveal them to each other until they were already 100% decided on. The fact that we both ended up with "EA" initials just proves that we share a brain.

Naturally, when it was time for a first birthday, the future BFF's simply had to have a joint party. (Prep for their future joint wedding.) I made them matching shirts and leggings, they got matching skirts and shoes and hair bows AND smash cupcakes. It was an explosion of pink and lime green girly fabulousness. I made cupcake toppers and table centerpieces, and Carrie got a custom photo cake with their joint first birthday photo on it.

Love love love these girls and I'm thrilled we got to make these memories for them. :)

OH my goodness... I am sooo behind with blogging sessions... my excuse is I have had SO many it's all I can do to get them edited, uploaded, galleried, and emailed much less BLOG them too!

Mini sessions will be held at Harmon Park in Kernersville, NC, with its gorgeous array of spring blooms, flowering trees, gazebo and fountain. Fun accessories will be provided for girls and boys; feel free to bring a favorite book or other props as well!

You can book for a child, siblings, couple or family group.

The mini session is 30 minutes and includes 5 hi-res digital files on disc. Add $100 for 5 more files; add $200 for all files.

An online gallery with a minimum of 20 images will be set up for you about 7-10 days after your mini session.

Meet one of my new favorite families.... this shoot was so much fun!! We went to the Factory district in downtown Kernersville for this shoot.

It's always fun when you have an audience laughing at you as you lie on your stomach or jump around making ridiculous noises to get a baby to smile. Luckily, I'm ok with making a fool of myself if it means I get a great shot.

This sweet baby girl was such a great sport and full of happy and cute... big brother is all boy and always on the move!

SO when she asked me to do photos of her twin daughters and the family I was like um, yes!!!!

T and M are completely adorable and funny, and also very much 19 month olds... never still, learning the concept of autonomy, and addicted to goldfish crackers.

Been keeping this under my hat for a while now... and it has been hard!! I didn't want to shout it from the rooftops til I had this in my hands and saw it with my own eyes!!!

I was so excited when the publisher of Kernersville Living magazine contacted me about doing the photography for their new Business Spotlight feature... I jumped at the chance!!

My first assignment was for a dance studio right on Main St. in downtown Kville, Dance Unlimited. I got to see the beautiful studio and meet the owner, Susan, who is a delight... so funny and nice, we hit it off right away!!! I spent about an hour there snapping away, and Susan was such a great sport about letting me climb on chairs, rearrange, and pose her this way and that. ;)

We ended up with some great shots, and the magazine folks were thrilled with what I sent over... I couldn't wait til the September issue hit the stands so I could see which pics were chosen and how they looked! I kept a lookout and finally today YEA!!! I found them!! I picked up several copies (teehee) and flipped through in the car... the kids each grabbed one too and were searching, so cute, they were so proud... and it was so exciting to see my work in print this way for the first time!!!!! I can't wait to get started on next month's project!!!

And of course, I have to share photos of my photos in the mag... lol!!

I love my job!!!! It means I get to meet the funnest people and the kayoot-est kiddos ;) and these guys are topping my list!! They braved the heat and 4000% humidity and kept their game faces on for the whole shoot... plenty of hi-jinks, but no meltdowns, woohooo! :)

I had such a BLAST with sweet miss "E" and her super-nice mommy and daddy this weekend!

6 months is such a primo age for baby pics, and this cutie proved the rule!! She was all smiles and giggles and happy adorableness the entire time! LOVE HER!!!

I ended up with some new all-time favorites from this session... love it when that happens! And here are a few I couldn't resist sneak-peeking!! :)

This girl is one of my favorite people in the world! I've known her most of my life it seems... we were half of a group of BFFs in middle school that called ourselves "The Giggleboxes"... we took a trip to Space Camp together... ahhhh memories LOL!!!! I am sooo happy to see her sooo happy... you guys are way too cute together and I can't wait to shoot your wedding in a couple weeks!!

Boutique owners could put a product photo on these and use them as hang tags or business cards. The possibilities are endless!!

These are super easy to use as long as you have experience using layers in Photoshop.
You can simply add your photo and update the text and be done -- or you can change the colors, fonts, etc -- it's up to you!
